Why Lord Ram chose Sugriv over Bali
Why Lord Ram chose Sugriv over Bali
This is one of the most confusing question in Ramayan. Bali
was given a boon by the creator of the universe, Brahma that he would get half
of his opponent’s strength while fighting. Still Lord Ram chose his younger
brother as his ally. Why? We will understand that more in detail.
First of all we first need to know who were Bali and Sugriv. Bali
was the son of Lord Indra and Sugriv was the son of Lord Surya. They ruled
Vanar kingdom named Kishkindh. Both the brothers had immense love and respect
for each other.
Once a demon who thought himself to be the most powerful came
to know of Bali’s boon. The demon knew that he had to defeat Bali to prove his
superiority. So the demon challenged Bali and he immediately accepted. During
the fight the demon ran into a cave. Bali followed and ordered Sugriv to guard
the entrance so the demon cannot escape and attack their kingdom. Sugriv
followed his order. Their fight went on for 1 year and Sugriv waited patiently
for his brother to return. But one day Sugriv heard a loud scream and noticed
streams of blood coming out. He thought his brother died while fighting with
the demon. With a heavy heart he closed the cave’s entrance with a large rock
so the demon cannot escape. Sugriv returned to his kingdom and filled his
ministers with the details. They advised Sugriv to become the king.
But Bali was alive the whole time and it was demon’s blood
that Sugriv saw. After killing the demon when Bali returned to the entrance he
was furious to see the entrance blocked. He thought his brother deliberately tried
to trap him. He somehow managed to break the rock and returned to his kingdom.
He immediately threw Sugriv out of the kingdom and married his wife Tara
forcefully. He committed the biggest sin
of his life.
Both Sugriv and Bali were equal devotees of Lord Ram and
offered help to find Sita. When Ram
heard about the incident he vowed to kill Bali. Sugriv challenged Bali to a
duel and Ram killed him from behind.
Now the learning begins:-
Bali with joined hands asks - मैं बैरी सुग्रीव पिआरा. अवगुन कवन नाथ मोहि मारा l
Bali asks him that why did he choose Sugriv over
him and what sin did he commit that Lord had to kill him.
Ram says - अनुज बधू भगिनी सुत नारी. सुनु सठ कन्या सम ए चारी.
इन्हहि कुदृष्टि बिलोकइ जोई. ताहि बधें कछु पाप न होई.
Younger brother’s wife, sister, daughter and
daughter-in-law all are same. There is no harm in killing anyone who sees them
with bad eyes. You committed the biggest sin of your life by forcefully
marrying your younger brother’s wife.

Now you may ask
what is the moral. The moral is always take the side of dharma even when the
side of adharma is very easy. If Lord
Rama had taken Bali’s side there would have been absolutely no war. Bali had
already defeated Ravan and roamed by tying him with his tail for 6 months.
Still Ram supported Sugriv who was in the side of dharma and a lot weaker when
compared to Bali. We will definitely be in this situation atleast once
in our life. That time we should not take the easy way but follow the path of
Dharma.
Atleast once in our lifetime we
will have to choose between Narayani Sena and Lord Krishna. Wait for the next
blog to learn more.
Till then Jai
Shri Ram. Have a great day!
Taksh Singhal
Hope to imbibe the teachings
