Hanuman’s Humbleness (Part 3)

A common question should occur in your mind that, Why did Hanuman wanted to eat fruits of Ashok Vatika? He should have immediately returned after finding Sita.

When Hanumanji was hiding in the leaves of a tree in Ashok Vatika, he overheard Lankini. She said that she had a dream in which a monkey is burning the city of Lanka. She further saw that Ram will kill Ravan in the battle.

But Hanuman was told by Jamvant to find Sita and return. He thought to himself that there must have been some update in the program that’s why god showed Lankini that dream. He assured the Lord that he would complete all the tasks. I hope that answers the question.

Now,Hanuman started gobbling the fruits. He started creating a commotion to attract Ravan’s attention. He picked trees and threw them, killed all the soldiers who came to rescue him. When soldiers weren’t able to capture him, Ravan sent his son ‘Akshaykumar.’Angad said before that he couldn’t promise that he will return back. He said that because Akshaykumar was his arch nemesis since Gurukul.Angad had personally asked Hanumanji to deal with him.

Akshaykumar came to Vatika,Hanumanji picked up a tree, threw at him and killed him with ease. This enraged Ravan even more and he ordered to capture him alive. He sent Meghnath next. His other name was Indrajeet, as he had defeated Indra in battle. He was extremely powerful but his valour was nothing infront of Hanumanji. Hanumanji again threw a tree, but he jumped from his chariot just in time. He started using all kinds of Astras but they had no effect on the Mighty One. Dejected with his failure he used the “Brahmastra”.Now Hanumanji had a boon that any kind of astra will have no effect on him,Brahmastra would have also gone invain.

                                       ब्रह्म अस्त्र तेहि साँधा कपि मन कीन्ह बिचार।

                               जौं ब्रह्मसर मानउँ महिमा मिटइ अपार॥

But Hanumnaji thinks to himself that he cannot oppose the Brahmastra. The sacred weapon has a significance that it fulfils the task given to it. He couldn’t play with its significance. So he pretended to faint and was taken to Ravan’s court. Ravan furious with him, started asking all kinds of questions. Hanumaji patiently answered. Hanuman advised him to apologise to the Lord.Ravan lost his temper and made Mrityu stand next to Hanuman. Ravan said,”Monkey I have made death stand beside you to scare you.Now you should stop advising me.”

                     मृत्यु निकट आई खल तोहि l

                      लोगेसि अधम सिखावन मोहि ll

Hanuman said that Mrityu was standing next to him but looking at Ravan. After this, Ravan’s anger knew no bounds. He ordered his soldiers to kill him.

When Hanumanji returned to Lord Ram,someone asked him that wasn’t he scared. He was all tied up and the soldiers were coming to kill him.To this Hanuman replied that he was tied up, not god.

Vibhishan interrupted Ravan by saying that they couldn’t kill a messenger.God will always recuse his followers from all kinds of problems. He never gives a problem that his follower can’t handle.

So Ravan ordered to burn his tail. Now Hanumanji began increasing the size of his tail. Everyone was bringing clothes from their houses to cover his tail but it was just increasing and increasing.Hanuman was noticing all the people who were bringing donation(clothes) and thought to himself that he would repay the donors with tax , and finally stopped his tail from growing. As soon his tail was ignited, the whole Lanka got ignited. He burnt the whole city just leaving the house of Vibhishan. He dipped into the ocean to extinguish the fire and went to Sita. He asked her for a souvenir that he would give to Ram. She gave him her Chudamani. Hanuman took that safely to Ram. On hearing the news of his dear wife, Ram’s heart filled with immense happiness and joy. Lord Ram fell to his feet. He picked Ram and hugged him. Jamvant started telling Ram about Hanuman’s actions. Hanuman declined that he didn’t do any of those things. Jamvant again said that Hanuman has finished all the work and Hanuman again denied. After some time Ram got irritated and said,”That if you haven’t done, Who has done the work?Me?” Hearing this Hanuman said Lord that’s what I have been saying from the beginning. You have done all the work.

See the level of Humbleness. He isn’t even taking credit of his own actions but we as humans also take credit of other people’s actions.

All of this is part of the Sunderkand. The kand is not over and I will continue if you want. Please give your vote and suggestions in the comment. Next I’ll talk about an interesting topic from Mahabharat.

I hope everyone learnt something from the Trilogy. Till then Jai Bajrang Bali. Have a great day!
